– One of Marlboro County’s oldest and most unique industries is being sold. Mrs. Jackie Furr of Cheraw, the former Brenda Hubbard of Bennettsville, told the Herald-Advocate this week that she was selling Blenheim Bottling Works, bottlers of famous Blenheim Ginger Ale, to Stephen Matheson Shelton of Albany, Oregon and a Bennettsville native. Mrs. Furr, who inherited the industry from her grandmother, the late Mrs. Alice Odom Hubbard, said that the Sheltons plan to move to Bennettsville and greatly expand the operation at Blenheim.

– There isn’t a sign up yet, but one of the C. P. Polston Warehouses near Emerson Electric Company is now the home of a relatively small, but brand new, Marlboro County industry. Southern Packaging Corporation is the name and president of the company is Don Williams of Fremont, Ohio. “We are geared for short runs, but we can handle an order from one to 10,000 units,” stated Williams.

– An official agricultural report from the U.S. Department of Commerce shows that Marlboro County ranks the second highest in South Carolina in the number of bales of cotton ginned prior to December 1, 1971. According to the report, 28,907 bales of cotton were ginned compared to only 22,798 in 1970.
